Speed & Performance

Secure internet shouldn’t mean slow internet. If you have to wait for 5 minutes to watch a short Youtube clip with constant interruptions, it’s simply not worth it.

You want to be able to enjoy browsing, gaming and streaming with decent download speeds. As such, it’s essential that a VPN server is fast and efficient. In fact, you should hardly notice that you’re using a VPN in the first place!

For this VPN review, we personally tested ZenMate’s download and upload speeds during daily use. You can find the results below.

To test ZenMate objectively, we performed a VPN comparison on with and without an active VPN connection.

Keep in mind that your personal results will depend on your location, internet service provider and time of use.

  • 14.9
  • 16.0
  • 29.2

When we ran a speed test, the maximum we hit was 14.96Mbps download speed and 29.25Mbps upload speed. And that’s when we were connected to the server recommended as the “best location”.

  • 25.3
  • 10.0
  • 92.2

By contrast, switching the VPN off almost doubled our connection speed — 25.34 Mbps download speed and 92.29 Mbps upload speed:

Generally, browsing speeds were still fine and we were able to surf the net without any hiccups. We did not encounter any issues watching Youtube and streaming both music and video.

We experienced some delays during gaming, however, with increased loading times and unstable connections.

For downloading purposes, we chose the closest streaming server, which allowed for fast download speeds - even when running in the background while we were doing something else.

ZenMate offers 3700 servers from over 74 countries across the world. Compared to other providers, their number of servers is relatively small. However, there are plenty of locations to choose from, especially from Europe.

Security & Privacy

Another important factor to consider when purchasing a VPN is security. VPNs guard your privacy and anonymity online, which - for most - is the main reason to use a VPN in the first place.

Unfortunately, not all providers offer the security they promise. To make sure that you can trust your VPN of choice, we focus on security and privacy in every VPN review we write.

For this purpose, we review the protocols used, their log policy, the availability of a kill switch and the information they ask when creating an account.

ZenMate VPN uses multiple protocols. They even have a special version of their VPN download software that works with OpenVPN. OpenVPN is viewed as a particularly secure protocol with strong encryption.

Generally, ZenMate offers great protection and encryption, especially with the addition of the OpenVPN protocol.

They also claim a strict no-log policy. This is important to know when you’re using ZenMate, since all of your internet traffic is under their control. If it weren’t for their no-log policy, they could potentially track all your online activity.

Their log policy claims not to view or keep a record of your activity.

The privacy policy of ZenGuard GmbH, the company behind ZenMate, does not contain any shady fine print concerning records of user data.

ZenGuard does, however, collect data on the use of their websites and products, but the data is never linked to ZenMate customers and their online activities.

The service also offers a kill switch, which is easy to find in the software’s settings - as is a DNS Leak Protection option.

Despite an active DNS Leak Protection, the test result shows that there is in fact a leak.

Fortunately, ZenMate’s kill switch works as it should and can easily be activated using the slider button. Once active, it will block all your internet traffic automatically the moment there are issues with your connection.

So even if your VPN gets disconnected, you’re still protected online.

Device Compatibility

  • Windows
  • Android
  • Mac OS
  • iOS 13
  • Linux

Whether you want a VPN for PC, tablet or smartphone, ZenMate has it all.

The Downloads page gives you access to the right software for your device, browser or operating system. Their VPN supports the following browsers and operating systems:

  • Chrome
  • Firefox
  • Opera
  • MacOS
  • Windows
  • Android
  • OpenVPN
  • Linux

When it comes to ease of use, there’s hardly a better option out there. With the click of a button you’re connected to a VPN. The lack of some of the more advanced features makes ZenMate a particularly good choice for beginners.

No VPN review would be complete without talking price.

Like many other VPN providers, ZenMate offers three different subscription packages. The longer your plan, the lower the price.

ZenMate offers 1-month, semi-annual and annual plans. As expected, the monthly plan is the most expensive, whereas the annual plan gets you 6 months free and allows you to save a whopping 80% compared to their monthly subscription.

With the semi-annual plan, you save 51%.

All plans offer the same features and you get a chance to jump in on their 7-day free trial to check things out before you commit.

Another plus is their 30 days money-back guarantee.

Below you will find the prices of their various plans. For the most up to date prices, check out their website.

ZenMate VPN is a simple and intuitive VPN that’s a great option for the average internet user.

Their website is easy to use and their software quick and easy to install. The software is straight-forward but limited in its capabilities.

For pro users who are looking for more advanced options, Zenmate might not be the best fit.
